Abstract

Following a day of presentations and discussions on advances in the field of image processing, imaging, and vision, this panel focuses on the evolving landscape of imaging education. Bringing together industry leaders, the discussion will explore how educational programs must adapt to rapid developments in computational imaging, artificial intelligence, immersive media, visual computing, and others. Panelists will share their industry perspectives on curriculum design, interdisciplinary training, industry-academia collaboration, hands-on learning, and the skills needed to prepare the next generation of imaging professionals and researchers.


Panelists

Ville-Veikko Mattila is the Head of Multimedia Technologies at Nokia Technology Standards. He has over 30 years of experience developing breakthrough multimedia technologies through research, driving international collaborative standardization, translating standards work into a strong patent portfolio, and successfully productizing innovations across various Nokia units. Since joining Nokia in 1994, Ville-Veikko has held several management positions spanning multimedia technology, digital health, artificial intelligence, and user interfaces and interaction, working at the intersection of advanced research, standardization strategy, IP, and business.

He received his doctoral degree from Tampere University in 2001 and has served as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Signal Processing at Tampere University. Ville-Veikko has authored numerous scientific journal and conference papers and holds a broad portfolio of patents and patent applications. Beyond research and standardization, he has led patent filing, technical analysis, and claim charting teams at scale, aligning standardization outcomes with defensible patent positions and licensing value. His research teams have been recognized with six Technology and Engineering Emmy awards, and his work and leadership have been featured in outlets such as MIT Technology Review, New Scientist, The Economist, and The New York Times.

Ville-Veikko actively contributes to industry forums and serves as chairman of the Metaverse Finland Ecosystem and board member of the Digital Defence Ecosystem in Finland. He lives in Tampere with his wife and three children.


Dr. Jarno Nikkanen has over 25 years of industry experience from Nokia, Intel, and Xiaomi. His experience covers camera algorithm design, implementation, architecture & system design, image quality tuning and benchmarking, technical roadmap planning, as well as leading teams and sites that are working in this domain. Besides mobile devices such as smartphones, device segments have included laptops, security cameras, and automotive cameras, to name a few. He received his M.Sc. and Dr.Sc.Tech. degrees in software engineering and signal processing from Tampere University of Technology, in 2001 and 2013, respectively. Dr. Nikkanen is also a photography enthusiast.


Esin Guldogan received the M.S. and the Ph.D. degree from Signal Processing Department, Tampere University of Technology in 2003 and 2009, respectively. Her expertise areas are machine learning, computer vision, imaging algorithms and 3D image processing. Currently, she is working in Microsoft Surface as a Director, where she is leading the AI activities in the Surface Camera team.
